CHILD NUTRITION MANAGER IN TRAINING

Reports To:    Principal and/or Child Nutrition Director

 

Supervises: Child Nutrition Assistants

 

Purpose: To act as a manager where assigned and train to become a full-time manager at an assigned site. This is a training position and person must interview for a manager position as they become available. This is a temp position and is not designed to be permanent.  To train to provide palatable and nutritious meals to all students in a cost-effective manner and to incorporate concepts of good nutrition as a part of the total education program.

 

Assignment:  10 Month 

 

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

 

FISCAL MANAGEMENT

The manager is responsible for collecting, counting, and auditing monies, making bank deposits, and handling receipts and disbursements.

 

REPORTS/RECORDKEEPING
The manager is responsible for preparing accurate time sheets, being in compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines, and for maintaining and submitting all required records and reports.

 

FOOD PRODUCTION AND SERVICE
The manager supervises the preparation and service of quality meals.

PURCHASING, STORING, INVENTORY OF FOOD AND SUPPLIES

The manager assures that food, supplies, and equipment are adequate, that an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all products is maintained and that all food, supplies, and equipment are received and stored according to local, state, and federal guidelines.

 

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
The manager supervises staff to ensure an efficient operation, which includes evaluating and documenting performances, providing training experiences for staff, and participating in the hiring and placing of staff.

SANITATION AND SAFETY

The manager promotes and maintains high standards of sanitation, promotes safety awareness, and demonstrates acceptable personal grooming practices.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Managerial, organizational, and presentation skills required.
  • Must possess confidentiality and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of adult learning, different learning styles, teaching methods, and practices
  • Extensive knowledge of food service production and kitchen management, food safety, and sanitation.
  • Analytical and detailed independent judgment is required. Makes decisions and recommendations under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Child Nutrition.  Ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems that arise and prevent crisis.

FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT
The manager is responsible for maintaining equipment and facilities in operable condition, maintaining an up-to-date inventory, and assuming proper accountability for equipment.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

The manager communicates effectively with various public and assures a positive atmosphere and image of the cafeteria and cafeteria staff.

 

NUTRITION EDUCATION
The manager provides nutrition information to local school personnel and students.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The manager is knowledgeable of current developments in school food service and shares with other child nutrition staff.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
The manager accepts the responsibility for other duties assigned.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITY:   

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  The ability to be a safe food handler, free of diseases that may be transmitted by food is an absolute necessity.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and be able to transfer extremely hot and heavy food pans from food preparation equipment to the serving area.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The selected candidate must be able to perform the duties of a rigorous work schedule which includes lifting, loading, and unloading, and pass a physical examination and drug screen certifying this ability.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:   

Child Nutrition employees may be exposed to extreme hot/humid and cold temperatures, either while cooking or storing and retrieving items from the freezer. This job requires lifting, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy and/or bulky items. Exposure to loud noises. Extended periods of standing.
