Summary
The custodian position provides students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop, by performing cleaning and maintenance activities in accordance with established practices and schedules.

Required education, training, and experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

 

Essential duties and responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Keeps the building and grounds neat and clean at all times. 
  • Keep an inventory of supplies, equipment, and requisitions replacements
  • Cleans/mops/service/supply assigned areas daily (including restrooms/water fountains). 
  • Cleans/dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment regularly and as needed. 
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition. May have to: Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors (varies by location). 
  • Empties all assigned trash containers daily. 
  • Keeps the building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lot, and playground areas free from trash and litter. 
  • Knows and follows all safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job. 
  • Shovels or treats all entrances and walkways during ice and snow events as appropriate. 
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as ensuring all exit doors are locked and secure. Checks often to see that all doors and hardware operate properly. Sets the alarm system as needed. 
  • Washes all windows, inside and outside, as needed. 
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • The employee will regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds.
  • Maintains school property including but not limited to cutting grass, tree trimming, weed eating, and brush removal (varies by location). 
  • Makes minor repairs as needed. Inspects all maintenance requests to determine the proper manner to ensure repair. Reports major repairs to the principal and maintenance department. 
  • Reports immediately any property damage or vandalism to the principal. 
  • Maintains a regular schedule as designated by the principal. This may include opening and closing the building and completing a check sheet of tasks performed during a workday. 
  • Move any furniture or equipment as directed by the principal or custodial/maintenance supervisor. 
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, and ladders to prepare for events, games, banquets, and meetings. 
  • Participates in on-site training
  • Other duties as assigned

  • The employee will regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently move up to 100 pounds. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, hold; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • The employee is frequently required to talk and hear. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to balance or climb.

  • Duties must be completed with students and teachers in the building. 
  • The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in some hazardous conditions.
